What might be of interest for POI is that PDFBox 4 will switch to using Log4J, 
so it uses the same logging framework as POI. Apart from that I don’t know too 
much about what will change. I contributed some patches that reduce memory 
consumption and other improvements but I cannot tell about the other features.

Sorry that I have almost been absent from POI development for such a long time. 
I might use POI for MS word documents in the future and likely will contribute 
more again once I run into issues.

I also try to get a fully JPMS compatible version of sparsebitset and might 
look into contributing to commons-math so that we will see a JPMS compatible 
release of that library too. If it gets done, POI will be finally be fully JPMS 
compatible too.
