The recommended way by apple to distribute software
for Mac OS X is on a Disk image and let the user drag
and drop the app into the application folder. The best
example is Gimp, an X11 app that has a good Mac OS X
droplet. I would love an install this simple.

Found this document:
http://developer.apple.com/tools/installerpolicy.html
which may be of use to you. It gives a detailed
discusion about installation.
