I think that you have the wrong version of OpenOffice or you
installed the PPC version of X11 on your Intel MacBookPro.

Simple question:  Did you get the Intel version of OpenOffice.org (should have 
Intel in the file name)?  It sounds like you did not.  The PPC version of 
OpenOffice.org will not run on the Intel based Macs.
