Use of X11 is 'anti-thematic' to the Apple Human Interface otherwise called Aqua. There are efforts, lead by Eric Bachard, to produce a Apple compliant version of OpenOffice.org. However, this will take more effort and is not ready. For the time being, the only publically available version requires the installation of the X11 user package, which Apple provides on the installation media for Tiger (Mac OS X) and is available for download from the Apple support web site for Panther (Mac OS X 10.3). And the short answer to your question, no it is not normal to use X11 on top of Mac OS X.
