Re-post from releases list

Hi,

I'd like to inform you that no further legacy 1.1.5 builds will be uploaded to the mirrors. The last build for that release was Spanish (es). Let's focus our efforts and resources on recent developer snapshots, betas and RCs.

I'd like to ask for a removal guideline (policy) for discontinued builds and would like to start the discussion here. Maybe there's a volunteer who's willing to host discontinued builds instead.
We, as Spanish NLC leads, wish to explain our decission for moving 1.1.5 legacy builds to the mirror network, as it seems to have launched this discussion.

First of all, we want to clarify that we don't waste any time or resources testing now 1.1.5, it has been used widely for so many time, that we know it is a safe build to distribute. So we think it deserved the same status that other localized 1.1.5 builds have, being hosted on the mirror network, so they could be easily available for spanish users.

We couldn't approve 1.1.5 when it was first released because we didn't have no QA team, and nobody understood the QA process at that moment as to be in charge of QA leading role (and still we don't think we fully understand it now). We see that QA processes are difficult to understand at first sight, only when you're involved in it, you start to know how it works.

IMHO, and I think Alexandro shares this point of view of mine, 1.1.5 can't be labeled as discontinued as you propose, mainly because we have a big number of users who still use it, and users that still look for it. And as you know, on 01-02-2007 a security update was released, so how to call it discontinued when it is still maintained.

We really need 1.1.5 available, because in many latin-american countries (Argentina amongst them) our reality is that there are still too many old-hardware based PC's deployed. And 1.1.5 still behaves acceptably on them, where 2.x versions works very slow because of memory restrictions.

I know there are problems of disk space on mirrors, and we will accept a removal of these builds if it is decided that way by our QA community, but have in mind that we will need a time frame, as long as we have to look where we can upload them to assure availability for our users. We have a hard week already trying to find that build for a user that ask for it, and couldn't find it.

Best regards,

Santiago Bosio
Spanish QA co-leader
