what do we expect ? If PDF Documents got generated by layout programs
with non standard fonts installed, which are usually not installed on
the system, your running openoffice.org. If you want to use your
OpenOffice.org environment as replacement for the layouter
environment you will not get in many cases a result without loss of
the used fonts and thus resulting a modified layout. For PDF
documents produced in your regular OpenOffice.org environment the
results are much better.
I think I clearly understand this. But, as far as I can see, the
problems mentioned in this thread are mostly *not* related to fonts.
Can missing fonts be an explanation for displaced or garbled graphics
or PDFs not opening at all or crashing OOo?
that's why I asked for a categorization of the single issues,
I tested with OOo-Dev Build m49 and the extension I provided on
qa-upload, I got no crashes and saw a few issue with displaced graphics,
I don't know the efforts for fixing these issues.
And in case of missing fonts, please see it with user´s eyes. A user
won´t accept his PDF document being garbled by OOo unless there is a
comprehensible explanation for that. So it would be a good thing to
show up a message about missing fonts if applicable. Otherwise the
user´s experience is just: "Doesn´t work". And after all, the
product´s reputation stands or falls with satisfied users.
understood, this might be an interesting feature for Office Documents
anyhow.
If missing fonts is a common problem for PDF Import and the software
does not handle missing fonts as an exception but delivers a wrong
representation of the document, then IMHO the software is not ready to
leave beta status.
I tend to agree,
