That's great, but doesn't the Basic DropDownList do this too? Here is a demo of the HTML Select tag [2]. For me it shows a checkbox and highlight for the selected item. Here it is in use in FlexJSStore [3]. Go to Products tab and look at the "Years of Experience" dropdown.
