Take a look at ComboBox and/or DateField. It might serve as a starting point.
Ideally, ComboBox, DateField and this fancier DropDown should share a thing like a "PopUpButton" that we had in Flex. The basic principle is that there is a ToggleButton that will show/hide a popup. That thing gets composited with some sort of display field, and various beads integrate the pieces, including where the dropdown appears and when it closes and how any display field gets updated.
