As for the statistical analysis tools listed for this competition, you'll be likely using UNO component technology to develop such tools, so the following may be useful: http://sc.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=dev&msgNo=1506 This post is actually regarding the Solver component, but it gives some guidelines for learning the UNO API (you can skip the solver specific part). Unlike the Solver component, there has been no prior work done on this stat tool task, so you have a lot of freedom here. I don't know what you could accomplish within a three-month time, but I hope you can come up with a good and feasible development plan that fits this rather limited time frame.
