I noticed a considerable difference in size between the "links updated"
and "links not updated" version of an imported Excel spreadsheet.
After checking the content.xml file I noticed that in one case the
whole linked tables were not displayed but present in the xml, while in
the other there were only references.
In case I choose the "reference" only version, edit it, save it as xls
and deliver, how much of the original data has been lost ? And was this
data valuable in the first place ? What are those linked tables
intended for ? I have never been asked that in Excel (as far as I
remember) so I am a little worried.
Links in OOo Calc are linked sheets, so you get the whole sheet's
contents. XLS files contain the data for each link separately. When
importing an XLS file, a linked sheet is created, but filled only with
the link data from the file. When saving to an XLS file, only those
cells from the linked sheet are saved that have formulas referencing
them. So you should end up with the same cells as in the original file.
