I noticed a considerable difference in size between the "links updated" and "links not updated" version of an imported Excel spreadsheet. After checking the content.xml file I noticed that in one case the whole linked tables were not displayed but present in the xml, while in the other there were only references. In case I choose the "reference" only version, edit it, save it as xls and deliver, how much of the original data has been lost ? And was this data valuable in the first place ? What are those linked tables intended for ? I have never been asked that in Excel (as far as I remember) so I am a little worried.

Links in OOo Calc are linked sheets, so you get the whole sheet's contents. XLS files contain the data for each link separately. When importing an XLS file, a linked sheet is created, but filled only with the link data from the file. When saving to an XLS file, only those cells from the linked sheet are saved that have formulas referencing them. So you should end up with the same cells as in the original file.

Niklas,

Thank you for your answer. But there are still part that I don't grasp:

Neither in Excel nor in Calc are the linked files/sheets originally displayed. I am only translating the displayed information in the files, I am not the creator so I don't know what was the purpose of linking the tables in the first place.

I see that if I "update the links", OOo removes all the sheet data and only leaves what looks like an "address" in the xml. Does that mean that when "updating" it considers that the original data is not present on the machine and thus removes it ? That is not exactly what one could expect from an "update" function. :)

I can edit the book, save it to xls and when I open it in Excel I see that the original file is here, and just as it were before editing, the "linked" data is not displayed.

Now, to check what is there, I re-open the xls file in OOo and check the content.xml file. What I see is that the "addresses" are still there and that the related data is not.

Does this mean that the person who'll use the file in the end will be able to re-link to the contents of the original tables -if present on his machine- or not ?

Are those "addresses" of any use on his side if the whole data has been removed ?

And last but not least, what is the point of this "update the links" function ? Is it considered that the linked data may not be useful and thus is ok to be erased ?

I found no clear information about the function and its premises, or about linked files in Excel so I would like to know how developers understand their purpose on the OOo side.

Sincerely,

Jean-Christophe
