Yep.  I even tried to remove inferences (in the top level APIs) that the
underlying mechanism has to be a state machine, although I imagine that this
waill actually be the case for most practical uses.

Correct, it doesn't have to be at all -- though any mechanism used to
do enough dialogs begins to look like some state machine abstraction
;-) (tried that)
