I contend that it is far from trivial to avoid problems in all deployment scenarios, even if everyone uses JDK 1.5. In log4j, we had a sophisticated migration strategy spanning three years whereby we renamed the Category class as Logger. It was a pretty miserable failure, causing endless headaches. I just do not want go through the same nightmare again. You can argue that this time we have done our homework, that this time is different.
