'killproc spamd' didn't take care off them, but it did take care of the defunct processes. I'm guessing that when the two children became zombies and the new children were created they were never kept track of (why I don't know), but did make spamd happy about the number of idle child processes. It almost sounds like spamd mixed up the PIDs of the new and zombie children.
