updated patch
ok, I think this fixes that. basically, recreate.t is catching buggy
behaviour that was in the previous patch; it needed to clean up the
created subs.
I made a few other changes along the way -- nothing too significant
though, mostly reformatting and merging with current svn trunk.
I need to benchmark this against the old code before it's applicable,
but other than that it should be check-in-able...
