Try running the spamd command from a terminal window, using -D (debug output)
and without the -d (daemonize) switch.  that'll produce lots of debug output,
and will allow you to see if the process dumps core.

 I suspect you'll just find that the perl interpreter is giving a segmentation
fault and dumping core.

if that's the case, we can't help you -- you need someone with experience in
fixing bugs in the perl5 internals. :(
