@revans2 @d2r @knusbaum Can you guys summarize all the issues this
addresses? It looks like it covers a lot. I noticed that at some point an issue
with shading was introduced in master (manifest as the fat jar in flux-examples
not including its dependencies), but this PR seems to cover a lot more.
I need a little time to review this before we merge it in. I mainly want to
make sure it doesn't cause any issues with the maven release plugin (which is a
painfully fickle beast ;) ).
