We asked the media department at FZI to create some new proposals for slightly changed logos and disucssed with them some basics (like explaining the ASF thing and so on ;-) in January. We'll discuss this on the list as soon as we got some proposals. Regarding the mailing list, I'm not aware of any plans to create a new mailing list. I guess that we discovered that there might be some issue with the users list we created right in the beginning? Philipp got an email on this list yesterday, but the archive seems to be empty and I also didn't receive any mail despite Whimsy saying that the list works. But in general I agree that there could have been more discussions on the list last month.
