I haven't used any in anger, but there is an awesome site where you can try out virtually all of them for real, to see what they're like from a user perspective and an admin perspective:
http://www.opensourcecms.com/ If you go to the "CMS Ratings" page, you'll see a ton of them categorised by type, and rated. I was looking at the "Lite" ones recently, and liked what I saw in Limbo and Etomite.
