My understanding is that almost everything that can be done with Commons BeanUtils classes can also be done with CGLib, and in many cases, can be done better. Maybe it makes more sense to start a parallel course which has no dependencies on commons-beanutils? This would also eliminate any of the compatibility concerns you mentioned on the mailing list.
