I'm still skeptical that anything is actually broken that "modern technology" can fix. It seems to me that with our relatively static content, a relatively static presentation fits best. Our content? Not really what you've proposed to redesign. Navigation? Most of our content is one or two clicks away from any page, via the sidebar. And the sidebar itself is really easy to find, thanks to a fairly uncluttered layout. Can't get any easier than that. Is it the fact that our links are blue and underlined? Maybe we lack features? I guess I can't think of any features that would be useful on this sort of site. We don't need a blogging engine, we don't need banner ads or surveys or comment threads or RSS input/output or [+|-] feedback buttons that hover over you saying "well? what do you think? well?", we don't need twitter feed integration, I doubt we really care about whether people can "digg" our pages. I don't think our users need to be able to zoom in and out of our news items, or report our security advisories to del.icio.us. And I hope I never ever have to see our site wanting to run some code from friggin' google-analytics. I wouldn't mind seeing some UI improvement in the issue tracker, but that's a separate site. Granted I'm getting old and crotchety, but I guess I'm just not seeing the value-add in any of this "modern technology" for a website such as subversion.apache.org. But maybe a mockup would help me understand. Peter
