+1. I'm under the same impression. I don't really understand the protocols involved, and don't know anything about various implementations which might be buggy or what not... but I see a serious problem if an authentication scheme that used to work just fine with 1.7 clients suddently stops working with 1.8 for no reason other than "serf only supports a newer protocol".
