See, this is the kind of statement that makes me uneasy. You make an
assertion about "the OS" (or about "the CPU" or "the architecture") as
if it were generally true for any OS, or CPU, or architecture; even when
it's clear that this is simply not the case. And your implementation
typically presupposes these generalizations.

I'm not saying that your optimizations have not been proven in general;
but we really shouldn't design our code based on assumptions about the
hardware or "the OS", and certainly shouldn't use them as arguments in
this particular discussion.
