   yeah I agree this will def be confused for a stacked area chart / is pretty 
misleading as is. 
   
   to improve it you could try to mirror this ggplot example by
   - making them super transparent to ensure that you can see the overlapping 
lines 
   - have the area stroke goes down to _zero_ even if the y-value does not (ie 
add a stroke around the entire area). this is true in the ggplot example and I 
think helps show that it's _not_ stacked.

   also just because excel allows it doesn't mean it's good, right next to the 
filled line graph in your example there's also a 3D area chart which is 
definitely frowned upon.
