Hi all,

we, the Germanophone Project, discussed in
http://de.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=61679 and gathered
arguments for the solution we have now.

Starting point was a usability study, that showed, that user search
the entry »Seiteneinstellungen« (engl: Page) at Datei|
Seiteneinstellungen (engl: File|Page) and not at Format|Page. (We
think they are word users ;)).

The suggestion in this issue is, to put this entry redundant in the
file menu, assuming, it will not disturbing there.

You think this will allow users to do their work quick without
searching functions that they are used to.

Arguments against this 'feature':

-- Additive (and senseless) in the file menu.
-- How to explain that this entry (»Seiteneinstellungen«) exists only
for the writer menu and not for the other modules?
-- Why emulate MS Word?
-- For new users the problem will not really solved
        ## because this entry only exists in the Writer
        ## this entry does not contain the function they are used to from
Word; the concept there is an other
        ## Word users too think that this menu entry isn't very logical

Arguments for maintaining our course:

-- Users who changes their wordprocessor recognize the logic and
remember the location of this menu entry
-- Don't break the concept of templates; the user should learn
right from start how to do formatting
-- If we wan's to change our system for the menus then over all
modules; it is senseless to do it differently in the modules
-- We think that usability is not the way I know but the way which
is insightful

We asked our community at the users-de-mailinglist and the
dev-mailinglist:

http://de.openoffice.org/servlets/BrowseList?list=dev&by=thread&from=1333895
http://de.openoffice.org/servlets/BrowseList?list=users&by=thread&from=1333558

People, who answered often work as teacher or coach, others are
experienced users or changed their office suite; others are using
several office suites.

### Statements out of the users-de mailinglist ###

-- Formatting for page will be searched under the menu entry
»format« - this is insightful and understandable für many users;
teachers can explain this their students. But unexperienced users
look at that menu entry for formatting page. We think this entry is
obvious there where it is at the moment.
-- More then one user think the format paintbrush will break the
systematics of formatting pages
-- Users think styles and formatting is better than the concept of
Word
-- Users don't want a Word clone; they want to hold the own product
strategy of OOo
-- They want uniform notations for the menu entry;
»Seiteneinstellungen...« / »Seite...« breaks that
-- They want short notations (it is very easy to create long words in
german, but not in any case it will be helpfull to use long words)
-- They think it is more important to have a actual online help
than to change the menu entries

### Statements out of the dev-de mailinglist ###

-- Other programms have menu entries like »page« which is hosted
under »file« (Adobe, Browser or Mail). This means to put »page«
under »file« will not only to take of the behaviour of Word.
-- KDE programms cover this kind of pagesettings in their printing
menu; but they are not comparable with Writer's page
-- MSO page settings are not direct comparable with page settings of
OOo
-- There is a difference between »page text format« and »page print
format«
-- Page at MSO is not the same like page in OOo; this differences
should be make clear by notation of menu entry. To use the
same entries will irritate the users too.
- dev users think that place where the menu entry is hosted will
not influence the decision to change the office suite. There will
be other criteria more essential.
-- Solving this problem with a manual more than one user said,
nobody will read the manual; others suggest to write a special help
to guide users through the differences
-- Professional users are using manuals; companies will
indoctrinate their employees.

Kind regards,
Helga

PS: I hope my english is understandable.
