Hi,

I like to add some comments, as it seems, it not clear, what the intention of Helga's mail was.

Hi all,

we, the Germanophone Project, discussed in
http://de.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=61679 and gathered
arguments for the solution we have now.

with "arguments for the solution we have now" is meant, the current menue structure ( menu item for the page format) should be left as it is now. Although it might be correct, that a usability study has shown, that new users (I'd guess Microsoft Word users, wihtout any motivation, to use OOo) are looking for "page settings" in the file menue, we think, the issue would bring no solution 8it would introduce inconsistencies instead).

With "we", I am speaking of users at the germanophone qa, dev and users list. The request, to drop the implementation of issue 61679 is supported by various users. We have long term OOo users, new users (just switched from MSO or other software) and a a number of trainers / teachers, who are able to see how unexperienced users are starting to work with OOo. We even have trainers who work as MS-Office trainers (able to have a look at computer newbies, starting to work with MS-Office).

So .. although we did not do a focused usability study, the summary, that Helga gave is based on a lot of experience.

To sum it up again:

only a very small number agreed, that it was good to add acces page format to the file menue. Most of those who supportde this idea, were thinking of "printer settings" (when looking for printer settings, it is obvious to go to the file menue).

most spoke against adding page format to the file menue. Main reasons were:
- it will bring in inconsitencies, as the issue is filed for writer only
- the OOo way of formatting Characters - Paragraphs - Pages is obvious and could be easily remembered, once you got it - having page settings in the file menue will lead MSO users the rong way, as the concepts in Writer and Word for page styles vs. page settings are quite different (most agreed, tha finding "Format - page" is not a real problem. The problems start, if you want to have different headings for the second page ...) - once more we will imitate other software's behaviour without real need, loosing our own identity

After all, we need to come up with this arguments, as it is the only way to suggest, that issue 61679 should *not* be implemented (as discussed in the Community Council: http://tmp.janik.cz/OpenOffice.org/CC-2006-03-30.txt).

PS.: during the discussion many of the participants even requested to remove an inconsitency that has been introduced in the german UI of 2.0. We have Format - Seite in all the module, but Format - Seiteneinstellungen in Writer.
