OOXML to ODF converter? We're talking about a constellation of different packages in different versions talking to a variety of file formats. I bet that most of these conversions will involve losing all but the most basic
and generic structures in the documents.

Yes, there's no doubt in my mind that citations will get thrown out all over the place. MS doesn't support them in earlier versions, and ODF can't really store the new citation fields in OOXML (until ODF 1.2, unless this metadata SC work falls apart).

I really think the user community will have to resort to using a
'microformat' approach involving functionality like links to encode
citations.

But our question here is about an API to connect word-processor and bib app. In others words, given your encoded citations, how do you connect them to your bib app?

I wonder if we could somehow do this in a staged way, building off of Dan's suggestion?

Level 1. WP sends IDs (URIs) to bib app, which returns formatted strings (current Zotero approach) and optional raw source; only UI in the WP is for the citation fields themselves

Level 2. WP includes a UI for browsing and searching bib app to select and insert citations; could build off of the above UI, or be something different; like MS's Research Pane.

I think ZOOM and the related protocols work for both approaches. I guess a level 1 bib app would have to support some subject that allows returning records by ID.

We'll probably need help from the Thomas Z. and Mathias B. to figure out the details. The devil is in those details after all.

In any case, I'd love to get Zotero working with OOo sooner rather than later, though in a way which won't be specific to either OOo or to Zotero.
