I think this comes down to whether or not the TapestryFillter (or, really, TapestryAppInitializer) invokes IOCUtilities.addDefaultModules(). If that's turned off (perhaps based on an entry in web.xml), then the AppModule can pick up the slack with explicit SubModule annotations.
