I've always thought that the Before/After-RenderTemplate phases are completely redundant, and have never used them so I wholeheartedly agree with removing them.
Oh the other hand I can see scenario's for the Before/After-RenderBody phases, and I have used them on occasion. I've looked and there are no instances where the end result cannot be achieved by using other phases and an additional component.
