GitHub user Neilk1021 created a discussion: Change about page description for
Texera

### Background

---

Currently, the About page for Texera reads as follows:

"Apache Texera (Incubating) is an open-source platform for human-AI
collaborative data science using visual workflows. It enables analysts to
construct, execute, and refine data analysis tasks through an intuitive GUI,
assisted by AI agents that understand natural-language instructions. Texera is
well-suited for a wide range of applications, including “AI for Science,” by
making advanced AI and data science capabilities accessible to a broader
community. It can run on a laptop for local use or be deployed in the cloud to
support scalable processing of large datasets."

### What's the problem?

---

If you asked someone "What is Texera?" from this about section, they probably
would say something along the lines of "A visual platform that lets anyone
analyze data using simple language and AI assistants." This makes it seem like
Texera is primarily an AI platform, which undercuts the differentiating factors
that make Texera unique. Yes, we have AI agents, but saying Texera is an AI
platform misrepresents the project.

Our current about me uses a full paragraph to not say much about the platform.
We say it's collaborative, but not *why* its collaborative. We say its
accessible, but the impression is that the accessibility is based on AI agents
when it's actually the core of the workflow.

### Why does this even matter?

---

"So what? It's just an about section, and most users won't even read it." This
is fair, but what I would like to contend with is two ideas.

1. This is a general undercurrent reflective in much of Texera's user-facing
side; the engineering is legitimately brilliant, but generally poking around,
we're broadly lacking many soft factors that make *real* adoption happen. This
would be a relatively small change, but I think talking about this and better
engraining user facing critique into team culture is a good habit that makes a
product valuable outside of our bubble.

2. The about section is currently the first impression the user gets of Texera;
what they see primes them to view our application a certain way. AI, while
useful for investment is not Texera's X factor, and if the user gets the
impression that this is "just another chatbot," we ruin a good opportunity to
prime their brain into seeing Texera's value and understand *why* they should
spend time learning how to use the platform.

### Questions for Discussion

---

1. If we were to sum up what makes Texera unique and cool in 15 words or less,
what would we say. What is the quickest "This is why you need this tool?"

2. What is the core demographic for Texera? Who specifically is the main
audience that we want to be using our services? Think about a persona of the
ideal user.

3. In your opinion, what does or doesn't work with the current about page.
