I had the same issue you described
I think it may have to do with versions of rspec/rspec-mock ... I had multiple
rspec gems installed
(2.14.x 2.10.x & 1.3.x installed), I removed the 2.14.x and it seems to be
doing better.
This is not a solution as more of a workaround, I'm not versed enough in the
gem ecosystem to propose a fix
