Far be it from me to complain but is there a particular reason that there are so many jars? Seems to be it should be one possibly two given the simplicity of tiles and really only encapsulating the template feature. MyFaces is 1, tomahawk is 1, torque is 1,log4j is 1. Unless there is some overwhelming reason to have more than one I would vote for one. Its a heck of a lot easier to maintain for sys admins.
AFAIK Struts 1 has many jars, Spring too, so I don't think it is a question of counting successful projects with one or many jars. We wanted to let people know that JSP support will not be different to a, future, FreeMarker and Velocity support, since we don't prefer one or another (or better, probably we preferred implementing JSP because it is the most used view technology, and it was also implemented inside Struts-Tiles). So the JSP-specific code has been moved to a specific module. About dependency maintenance, I think that it can be succesfully managed through the use of Maven at every level. Just my 2 eurocents.
