Did you check the size and at least one of the ckecksums?

If it comes from some broken caching, you could try to replace the download URL with an equivalent one, hoping that the proxy doesn't normalize the url. E.g.

http://archive.apache.org/dist/tomcat/tomcat-5/v5.5%2e17/bin/apache-tomcat-5.5.17.exe

(note the %2e replacing a '.').

Ranier (and Mark),

Thanks, again. But I'm still stumped.

I've downloaded apache-tomcat-5.5.25.exe and it works just fine. This
indicates that the Windows installer is okay.

But apache-tomcat-5.5.17.exe gives me that error message (on two different
machines). It just seems like that particular file has some kind of
problem.

I don't understand

"Maybe a proxy between you and archive.apache.org has a bad file in its
   cache?"

How would I deal with this?

Hello Mark,

Thanks for the quick reply.

When I try to execute apache-tomcat-5.5.17.exe on WinXP or Win 2003 Server,
I get
the message:
  NSIS Error:
The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete.
This could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download or a virus.
  ...
The correct file metadata on archives.apache.org are:

Size: 5090572 Bytes
MD5: 0bb2827c5eacf570b6064e24e0e6653b
SHA1: 7d31f66efb22b2fa60490e3bed7019c0a2b3cee4
SHA256: 5b808abd5b7a3d561d690bba97c4c428215013e7f2e26ddd911e1cf63580ed90

The size of the file is close to the earlier and later versions.

I can download and it works on my Windows system.

I've tried redoing the download several times, and still get this message.
I don't understand why it works for you and not for me. I'm fairly sure I
don't have a virus. Can you help?
Maybe a proxy between you and archive.apache.org has a bad file in its cache?

Also, what do you mean by "cross post"?

Thanks,
