Andy:

I have used Netbeans for about 15 years now. I look at Eclipse
occasionally and just recently evaluated it again. It comes up
lacking every time. I am doing a little bit with Android at the
moment and, as you know, the android development environment is being
developed on Intellij. The big thing for me with Intellij is that you
can only have one project open at a time (unless I'm missing something
-- I'm not accomplished with it). Since I do client/server
applications I need 3 projects open all the time; client, common,
server. So Intellij doesn't work for me.

When Netbeans 8 was released there was some noise about it supporting
TomEE but it only supports the Tomcat portion of TomEE. There is no
support for the EJB container which, for my use, kind of defeats the
purpose since I do real applications -- not browser garbage. It is
not difficult, however, to connect a java client to TomEE as you
recently revealed on the TomEE forum.

While Glassfish is the RI for JEE it apparently has some problems.
Nobody has yet, to my knowledge, documented how to connect a Netbeans
Platform application to Glassfish. I managed to get a Platform
application to connect via websockets but then Glassfish would not
dish up a DataSource (appears from Google searches to be a
long-standing issue). Netbeans should replace Glassfish with TomEE
and really, truly integrate it into the IDE in my opinion. OpenEJB
works fabulously and for those who need the browser access Tomcat
provides that with, as far as I can tell, hot deploy from Netbeans.
At least if you drop a new *.war file into webapps it redeployes -- I
assume that is what the IDE does. I drop an *.ear into the apps
directory and restart the container.

In summary to your question: I use Netbeans to develop Java
client/server financial applications with lots of data input (browsers
are very inefficient at data input in my experience) and reporting
(currently using *.pdf but will be soon experimenting with the Apache
ODF toolkit). Swing is a fabulous interface and JavaFX will be
getting more important to my work all the time since Swing is
evidently in "maintenance" mode. Connectivity to EJB is essential in
my environment. I'm still using RMI but leaning strongly toward
websockets for my next generation connectivity.

Just my $.02.
