Hey Andy, folks,

I am actually Eclipse user. But in my spare time I teach Java EE in a few
universities here in Sofia. Speaking about that kind of experience (first
steps in Java EE), I find Java EE development with NetBeans far more
intuitive than with Eclipse. Let's take the JPA part for example: in
Eclipse you have so many dialogs in the JPA setup wizard and one has really
hard time to explain them to a new-comer. And here we are talking about
people who heard that programming in Python, PHP or RoR is so much easier.
So I try to do my best to show them that Java EE is not that bad as they
have heard. And bootstrapping with the current tooling doesn't help me much
with that.

Since this semester we are teaching Java EE with TomEE and we keep using
Eclipse. What I found frustrating about this is that the Tomcat adapter
keeps its own set configuration files (e.g. tomee.xml), different than
those in the <tomee-dir>/conf. So adding a new Data source to the TomEE I
use for development in Eclipse was issue for me as well: I added that to
<tomee-dir>/conf/tomee.xml in the way it was in the documentation. But at
the end it did not result in anything in the server which I used for
deployment in Eclipse. So I had to do a Google hangout with Dave to find
out that I had to change the tomee.xml in the Servers "project" in my
Eclipse workspace. Now if I put myself in the shoes of the students, I can
imagine why they feel like that about Java EE.

So NetBeans support for TomEE would be something that I would admire.

*@Chuck:* about your troubles with IntelliJ: the thing that you call a
project in NetBeans and Eclipse, there is called module. There the
'project' maps to the 'workspace' notion in Eclipse or 'project group' in
NetBeans. So you can have a multi-module project in one IDE window in IDEA
as well. Especially if you use Maven/Gradle/SBT: IntelliJ will do the
handling for you if you just import the parent project.

Cheers,
Ivan
