Dear CPH
Colin,

Ok tell me how to fix this? You are saying that it is related to using or
installing openoffice?
Well show me how to install openoffice so that it loads under 10 seconds on a
pentium 200 with 64mb of ram. Ok even if we have to use 128mb of ram on say a
p2 350 we still don't get a loading time that is under a minute on a linux box.
If we Quick start it then the performance increases but it is still very slow
to load. Yet we do this on a windows box we find a much improved load time.
I am using versions 1.1.2, 1.1.3 and 1.1.4. I have tried openoffice 2.0 Beta though don't think that it was recent (are there improvements related to my problem) I will load one up.
I have tried many different linux versions to address this problem. The
best is a server install of ubuntu trimmed off with a lightweight
display manager. I have to write my own quicklaunch application to use
the quick start option. Believe it or not openoffice actually works
quite well on the above systems, it just takes a few years to load.
Cheers
Colin

What version of OOo are you using ?
Are you using the quick starter option ? ( I think so as you mentioned
"preloader" )
Have you tried using a recent build of OOo 2.0 beta ?

Ive sent this off to the mailing list but mabie you can help me better.
I am using a ubuntu based server install system.
Openoffice though seems to run extreemly slow on low ram systems under
any linux version. I am talking 64mb or 128mb of ram.
I have preloaded it, I have trimmed it I have done everything. I have
even run the windows version under wine (which worked surprisingly well).
How can I get openoffice up to speed? This is a really important issue.

Dear Open Office
I am a computer recyclers. I get old Pentium 2's and rebuild them with
Linux.
I am having an issue with open office on a Pentium 2 with 64mb of ram it
takes 3 minutes to load on a minimal desktop. If I preload this via the
command ooffice -quickstart & then run openoffice it takes a little over
1 minute. If I increase this to 128mb of ram it preforms a little
better. But it still takes an incredible amount of time to start up.
This is followed by a 10 second lag where your words will come up slowly.
Altering the memory usage controls does nothing.
I have compared these machines with the equivalent (actually poorer)
windows machines. They run open office much faster even though Windows
xp uses much more memory. I haven't even preloaded them.
Is there any plans for a lighter version of open office that can still
read .doc specifications (I know about abiword and koffice)?
Alternatively is there a library that I can add to make openoffice
usable if you are running only 64mb of ram?
Is there a team that is working on making a lighter version of open
office (I will join it)?
Could I please get some answers to these questions. Recycling old PC's
is a huge issue. We need an office sweet that is use able and so far
your office sweet is it. Sadly it cannot run well on these machines as
they are not the latest specification.
Please Open office you are my only hope?
