Chip Senkbeil commented on TOREE-274:
-------------------------------------

There is an Apache 2.0 licensed Java REPL here:
https://github.com/albertlatacz/java-repl

The main factors are whether or not the REPL can produce serializable class
files that can be shipped over the Spark and how closures would work in Java
when sending over byte code.

> Java support possible?

> In the IPython world, there exist(ed) a Java kernel:
> https://github.com/Bachmann1234/java9_kernel . For Spark, Java is one of the
> key core languages. Given the existing support for Scala, and taking into
> account no native REPL for Java, is there a possibility of a Java kernel in
> the near (or any) future?
