I noticed that there's a Tuscany IRC channel referenced on the Tuscany web site -- http://tuscany.apache.org/getting-involved.html. I joined it, but doesn't look like it's being used by the community. FYI, while I was there somebody else joined the channel and asked if this was a place to talk with Tuscany developers...

Different Apache communities have different policies regarding IRC channels. So, don't know if you've explicitly decided not to use IRC as a communication mechanism, or if it's just fallen into disuse. Either way, suggest the references be deleted from the web site or start using the irc channel... ;-)

Personally, I like IRC. We use it in the Geronimo community. I think it adds a more human dimension to community interactions. It's also can be a more convenient (and immediate) form of communication. It's a lightweight means for resolving simple problems; tapping somebody on the shoulder, if they broke the build; debating politics; or just saying hello. You do need to be careful about protracted design discussions or basing decisions solely based on IRC conversations. If you find you've discussed a problem to too great a detail, summarize the conversation and post to the dev list. Just my 2 cents...
