It *is* possible to configure Jira to allow the editing of closed issues, but I believe it is a global configuration. For me, "resolved" is better then "closed" as long as this global setting is disabled. I think that the Jira statistics (e.g. progress bars) count "resolved" and "closed" in the same way.
