Daniel, this is a good point but hopefully the user should be aware of this...then again, maybe not! I don't know anything AT ALL about Ubuntu (or Debian) however.

Well, I'm certainly no expert. :-) I just narrate my experience with alien.

But at least we won't get blamed if it doesn't work, since it'll be clear that this is "third party".

Have you been follwing the Java issue? Java components in OOo will be compiled with GCJ.

oh boy! and what will that mean long term I wonder...

And what do you mean by removing Java? I have OOo

If all goes well, OOo will kep using Java, just as today, but making sure that this Java works well with GCJ and other free JVMs. So this is not about removing Java, but making sure that it works with free GCJ.

Well, I didn't mean to say they are "official".

I was responding to John's comment that the user would know he was installing official packages. My response was that this script is not any more official than the .debs we have, and in fact, they are less, because the .debs are made by OOo developers who work with the installation team.

Hence one assumes a certain "install at your own risk/lack of OOo support" warning.

Yes. And that's a confort.

Cheers,
Daniel.
