Hi Kay,
The naming is actually consistent...well now, anyway, and if you look
at the instructions from the mirrors project, this is clear. What IS
inconsistent is the number of versions that are currently stored on
the mirrors.
I was indeed referring to the inconsistency over versions ;) and for
different languages... there are also other irregularities to deal with.
Yet this is only my opinion, and of course you may disagree. But my
message is actually: why not first get all heads in the same direction.
That's always a VERY good goal when working in a group. :)
Glad you agree :)
My goals (prioritized):
1. Servers should be randomized, making better descriptions is
allright, but as it's such an easy thing to accomplish using
javascript, and code is already available...
Why do you feel this is important? Priority #1. Yes, it's not
difficult to do with JS, but, again, my question is why?
Because explaining is a solution, but why should you read these lines
before doing something so simple as downloading. Downloading OOo should
be free of hassles, and this is just another (and of course the solution
is so easy).
2. One should be able to download OOo in their native language
directly (as that is assumed by the interface as we have it now).
Different option is to remove the language dropdown completely, and
just refer in text to the international pages, else it doesn't make
sense
Yeah...this is a bit of a misdirection with the current page. My
thought was to somehow at least "warn" them about it as we're doing
with the JRE business. I don't think the way we're handling this is
bad, just that it isn't at all clear WHAT will happen.
The dropdowns on the same level as the other dropdowns assume they
relate to each other. Well, the dropdowns on the download page now only
relate when US English is been chosen. That's confusing. If it turns out
to be too difficult to handle it all on one page, then I would suggest
creating another page listing all download pages for all files, and
refer to that page. I believe that is a better solution than currently
being used. If you ask: Why haven't you changed that recently: well, my
only goal then was to solve the cd-rom vs. p2p vs regular downloads issue.
But the promising thing is that Christian sees possibilities using the
german script for making this possible.
3. With or without JRE should actually be a checkbox (it's a minor
issue, but makes more sense)
4. There should be an advanced and a simple way of downloading (my
comment on the german download area was that it showed too much to
the average user) I don't think many will complain if much
information is being given, but it will make the whole action of
downloading look more complex than it is to average users, therefore
making the threshold of downloading OOo higher.
Do you think what we currently have implemented is too complicated?
I've been meaning to check the "support" list logs on this but just
haven't had time.
No, well, now it gets; versioning for example, just as Chad says, may
not be so obvious to new users. Even having them to think about it,
instead of having the computer do that for them, is again another
barrier between the user and the action of actually downloading OOo. If
the download page is already confusing, they might think, what about the
program?
9. Make it possible to choose between different
versions (only in the advanced download options)
What is your priority regarding to the download options, you didn't
reply to it, still I'm curious since
http://downloads.openoffice.org/index.html doesn't offer a whole bunch
of versions either. And I didn't place this point on 9 because I had
problems counting after 4 ;) I think that the way it's solved right now,
using the sidebar to link to these special downloads, is sufficient. I
asked before, but never got a reply on my question: what is missing on
the current download page for 2.0.2 that withholds it from becoming a
good replacement for http://downloads.openoffice.org/index.html ?
Future goals:
- Incorporate P2P downloads: Can be another checkbox, followed by a
dropdown showing the three supported P2P methods.
- Offering ISO's (in advanced downloads)
- Creating an python script (or whatever), that will make maintenance
of these pages much more easier
You might be waiting a LONG time for this...
that's why I called it future goals ;)
Looking forward to your reply!
g.,
Maarten
