Hello, all (please forgive the top posting but I think it will make things less confusing for the moment)

It seems as if we've kind of stalled a bit on this endeavor...I was actually thinking of taking on a rather major overhaul of the New User page (new.html) over the next week or so, but I'm wondering where we are with this and how, exactly, the new user page would tie in with what's been proposed so far. hmmmm....

Molcan,

Perhaps you could do more work on your existing mockup an incorporate the changes that have been suggested here?

"Get OpenOffice.org | Get Support | Get More...* | Get Involved"

I would just make one small change and use "Get More Information"

That area could then link to a, hopefully better and improved, new user area.

yes, I know, LOTS going on at the moment :/

and what about something more simple and user-friendly?

This is not a final proposal, just the draft, but I think that we need a very simple main site, what do you think about something like this?
Conceptually I really like it!
+1
Download pic first (maybe you/we could find a better picture that didn't make the user look like s/he is carrying this HUGE burden? :/ )
I think the "Get OpenOffice.org" button we have is working well, it is obvious to the end user and allows them to choose by which method they want to get OOo.

I hope it is not made difficult for people to find the CD distributors list.
then Support, then "Find More" (??? not sure about this wording or where this would eventually end up, but we can deal with that later...)
I'm thinking:
Get OpenOffice.org | Get Support | Get More...* | Get Involved

*Links to Extensions, NL, About OOo... etc.)
The "Get Involved" link could then split into Developers or other volunteers.

Regards,
James
