Hi all,

Looking at the various proposals mentioned on the user page requirements page [0] and at the one that Filip posted to the list [1], and also trying to be realistic (hard for me), I think we have to choose. :-)

This is for the *homepage*. As agreed, portal.ooo is on the drawing board for later. The goal now is to improve the homepage so that it is more usable by would-be users and encourages downloads.

I've also discussed the idea of fixing download.openoffice.org. I want to do it, but we can also, I think, see about the immediate desire of enabling a one-click functionality on the homepage for most users via javascript. The scenario is then that if you can't get it in one click, you go to download.openoffice.org.

In short, the goals:

* Make it *obvious* how to download OOo and to add javascript to the CollabNet page that enables one-click downloads. (If this is not possible, I need to know and we can go to using other servers at download.ooo. But we need still to do the homepage and need to finalize the discussion.)

++ Apple iWork and Mozilla Firefox do it well; Symphony, too. (iWork is more what it is than straight download, but that is a detail.) Firefox is getting busy but has the great advantage of giving the reasons.

* Declare what OOo the product and community are about: iWork does a splendid job of giving us a model for this, I believe.

* Community is important, really important. Participation is its key, and so the page must also invite participation.

Matthias has useful located the design ideas into a good presentation, though I think we can add to the samples using the guide above.

Kay asks in the wiki about our audience. Erwin T. presented on Who uses OpenOffice.org at OOoCon in September [2] The vast majority are Windows users with most coming from .com (US).. But there are millions from Europe and Asia. Seemingly, Individuals are the dominant species, with most using OOo at home. Education is important as a vertical; business (SMB) and gov't, etc., are also strongly present, one can infer, but these get it often enough via other means. And a great many download it on a lark or to save money.

To summarize: we need to appeal to users and to address that we are good. :-)

Deciding on homepage
----------------------------

If possible, we should review samples this week, with a deadline of the end of the week. The point is simplicity. The homepage we have now has too much going on--too many graphics, too much information. We need to simplify.

Best
