I have to disagree here. The problem with the OOo main page (for the
longest time) was that there was no way to find out what you get when you
download OOo. I'm still not pleased with the way the components have been
shoved to the side on the current page, but they are an absolute
necessity.  Remember, not everyone coming to the main page is coming in to
join the community -- I'd be willing to bet that most people are coming to
find out "what is OpenOffice.org, what does it consist of, and what can it
do for *me*?"

The news is important, in that it lets people know that OOo is actively 
being talked about/used.
