Hi all,
A lot has happened the last couple of weeks, much activity, some quite
heavy, but very interesting debates at both [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (thank you all who participated for that!)
So what is the status, an overview:
-Visual appearance
-Requirements
-One click download
-Site structure
and
-What's more
__Visual appearance____
As you might have seen from my recent e-mail, I have started a call for
voting on the proposals that have the best visual appearance.
See the thread: [website-dev] [art] Decide on visual appearance [update]
For an overview of the proposals:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Website/Proposals
__Requirements____
Maybe still a bit chaotic, and loose-ended, but still great ideas, and I
think we have been able to distil at least the most important bits into
some proposals referred to above

__One click download____
We still need someone to demonstrate the Java detection (which seems to
be rather slow, when we take java.com as an example), but we can use the
script of Andre to detect OS and language:
http://marketing.openoffice.org/tryouts/Why.OpenOffice.org/en/download.htm
As a primary goal I suggest focussing with one-click download on a
limited set of operating systems & english language only:
- Computer running Windows >=98, and in need of JRE (no java plugin
installed)
- Computer running Windows >=98, and not in need of JRE (java plugin
installed)
It would be good to RECOGNIZE Mac, Linux, Solaris, but it will not be
possible to offer one click for these. Instead returns instead of a
'Download now' text, 'Download'
This idea has been visualized in 'murb_proposal1', see:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Website/Proposals#Action_statement_based
__Site structure____
Of course visual appearance is not everything, and so more architectural
proposals have been left undiscussed... but maybe it can be somekind of
guideline.

__What's more____
Only recently we have notified the [EMAIL PROTECTED] list about our efforts,
and they are getting involved now as well. I hope that we'll have soon
some visual style that at least most of us are happy with, and we can
start working on designing the sub pages. There partly the site
structure comes into play. Almost all proposals require sub-homepages
targetting a more specific group of users, e.g. those wanting to know
more, seeking help, just downloading. Some of these pages need to be
created. Even though much of the content is already there, it is
important to have a consistent style. But that'll develop. I am
optimistic about the progress so far (it couldn't have gone faster if
you ask me)... so Louis, I hope you're satisfied ;)

Maarten
