Hi Ivan,

Thanks for introducing your current work on this list as well!
similar to this:
http://moofx.mad4milk.net/ - in other words, clicking an action
statement will reveal more content.
Similar to this, or exactly this? I'd propose to use this effects library as it is. No need to copy it, optimized for various platforms and small... and it is released under the an MIT licence, so no problem there with licensing. On the other hand, it does eat 20kb (when the accordion is supported)
I want to learn more about OpenOffice.org
-- this could just jump straight to why.openoffice.org (BTW, when will
the new why design replace the current one?)
Since there will be a style change, I'd put one page in between that kind of leads toward the style change. I don't know anything about the why pages, they have never really been discussed here. I guess marketing maintaims them?
I want to download OpenOffice.org
-- this will contain the download options discussed in the one-click
download thread - the detected OS & language will be displayed, along
with other options - JRE/no JRE (or equivalent OS-specific options),
download a different language, download via torrent, where you can get
the CD from, and so on.
What I proposed was that the box would open up (see the moo fx website), and you only get a direct, minimum (one if possible) click, download button and some small links to 'other downloads', 'cd-roms'.
I need help with my OpenOffice.org
-- this will contain links to the various sources of support -
documentation, forums, etc.

I want to do more with my OpenOffice.org
-- links to clipart, templates and extensions, with a very brief
explanations for each of these

I want to participate in OpenOffice.org
-- links to submitting bug reports, projects, donating, etc.
What I am kind of unsure about is, is whether all blocks should use the moo fx accordion effect... e.g. help may need a little bit of more explanation than only a few links 'go to forums', 'go to mailinglist', 'download user guide' and 'complete overview'. I think in this case it would be better to open up a new page allowing for a bit more space to explain things... My idea was to have only limited text when a box opens up... but we could see what works or not.
Now, onto the next issue: fonts. Bitstream Vera Sans has poor kerning
(I'm running Windows XP just for reference), which is particularly
(...)
I'm not so concerned with fonts myself. I'm not really a designer.
- To help differentiate the various options, how about subtly making
the key words in each action statemtent a slightly darker color? This
would make them easier to spot and differentiate - i.e. 'learn more',
'download', etc
Sounds like a good idea! Might help convince those who are highly sceptical about the action statements too.
- Do we need to design for 800x600? The current design does this, but
the new one will need either less menu options or transparent tabs
because the 'wave' eats 560 pixels, leaving only ~220 pixels for the
navigation items (with scrollbar). Or, the wave could be made smaller
(both vertically and horizontally, because this design's header is
almost 50% taller than the current header.
Guess you heard it more than often, but while higher resolutions may nowadays be much more popular, there are also people not browsing full screen. I think we can design for a higher resolution. What we do have to ensure is that the page can still be navigated, that is enough imho. See the current menu bar for example. If you make it smaller, while not perfect, you can still click the links.
- A dynamic flash file (fed with variables passed to it via HTML)
I am not a fan of using flash for anything and it is hackish. It harms usability, e.g. in most browsers it will break the font-size option. On the other hand, appearance matters for a professional look (something we want)... but no, I favour, maybe slightly limited, styling of text using CSS over a Flash hack.
But the most important thing right now is sorting out the wording of
every part of the homepage's content and just how much content we want
(do we need a footer, what links should we have, filling in the
whitespace on the right side of the page, etc). So please join in this
discussion and share your thoughts.
I wrote down the preliminary idea down here (I think this is faster than ping-pong-ing zips with source around ;) ):

My native language is not English, and much of it is just a rough draft. So please improve where you think improvement is needed.
