Leonard,

I also already raised a similar issue on [EMAIL PROTECTED] as "we have too many entry points for developers. There we have:

* development.openoffice.org
* http://contributing.openoffice.org/programming.html
* http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Main_Page#Getting_started_with_OOo_development

and many more locations I'd guess.

Regarding the roadmap beyond OOo 3.0 the outcome of the quarterly review meetings (sections long term planning) should result into an overall roadmap for the OpenOffice.org project.

What we desperately need are editors which are responsible for important areas of the website and do continuous consolidation of the various pages developers produce.

I think we need to define what our important target audiences are, what they expect to find on the site and put names for those areas on it.

What comes to my mind is:

1. Target Audience: User

most important topic for them

 1. Download Area
 2. Documentation
 3. User Support/Forums

2. Target Audience: Developer

most important topic for them

 1. Where to start / How to build
 2. Developer documentation
 3. How to participate

3. Target Audience: Not yet OOo users, press, outer world etc.

 1. Why OpenOffice.org
 2. Press Releases
 3. Roadmap

with such list we haven't addressed all important areas to cover but I think it makes clear what huge effort a consolidates site will be,

Martin

Hi list members,

I have seen Frank doing some tough work recently to improve the UX-project. And I send him and Christoph my best wishes in their new roles.

In order to improve the UX project and ultimately OOo, I will add some further suggestions.

1.) ROADMAP
===========
Inkscape 0.46 was launched yesterday (more on the new features later on). What I always admired about the Inkscape project was the roadmap, right there from the mai web page:
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Roadmap

Yes, I know, there is:
- this seemingly antiquated list: http://development.openoffice.org/todo.html
   [and somehow not a roadmap]
 - http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/To-Dos
   [How long does it take to read this one?]
- this Calc list is quite nice: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Calc/To-Dos/Usability
    but still needs some polishing for a roadmap
 - http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Features
   -- the title is sexy, but it ends at a pretty meager OOo 3.x
 - I think I missed one, but I can't remember which one
   ...
   WHICH brings us to one of the problems:

PROBLEM:
========
How visible are these lists?

Why are there so many lists?
Obviously, people don't know know about their existence and clone the same functionality over and over again. What is really missing is a brief but forward looking roadmap.

Why do I insist on this topic?
===================
I like to quote Bryce Harrington:
 > When we formed Inkscape it was important to us to communicate
 > where the project intends to go, and what steps are needed to get there.

I invite everyone to read this interview from 2004:
http://dot.kde.org/1099664490/

And the following is not just my opinion, but also the opinion of the interviewer:
 > From even a glance at Inkscape's website, one quickly realizes that
 > this project has sharply-defined goals with a clear focus.

I therefore strongly suggest building such a roadmap for OOo. It might have not prevented some of the problems and misunderstandings in the recent OOo history, but it surely would have eased many things and reduced some of the tensions.

A roadmap clears many aspects both for the users and the developers. And it allows planning more easily for the future.

This post tends to become very large and loose focus, therefore, I will continue in a sequel post.

Sincerely,

Leonard

P.S. cc'ed Lutz because this clearly has bidirectional ties to the OOo global concept / strategic planing

Matthias started to work on a vision, but the last post is from December 2007 and - well - this page just ended as obscure as all other pages. But more on this later.
