So, further testing. I would really like to resolve this...i.e. detect the Java version the client has installed rather than just dumping (perhaps) an additional JRE on them. I find this kind of approach bad from a maintenance standpoint (security updates, etc) to say nothing of downright confusing.
I agree, the basic approach and idea is good, but I clearly want to avoid loading a Java applet which takes some seconds. On my machine (4 year old laptop) this just sucks :-(
