Hi John, We just tried to install JDK 7u51 (.dmg) on Mac OS X 10.10.5 but getting the same error as you got. We initially checked this issue (switching between source and design view issue) with Mac OS X 10.9.x and found out that is solved with 7u51. That's why we recommended you to use 7u51 as a workaround. But now JDK installation fails on Mac OS X 10.10.x because of a known issue with JDK installer[1] and it has been fixed with 8u20.
