Current suspicion is that the reason behavior changed was that
cut-over/deprecation. I'm betting the old *xalan:evaluate()* used the
stylesheet's active function table, whereas *dyn:evaluate()* is only aware of
the XPath-native functions.
Could go all the way back to when the former function still existed and look at
how its implementation differs from the latter, as way of determining what's
not getting set...
